Sofia has come a long way—both literally and emotionally—since arriving at Suncatcher Sanctuary in February 2023. Originally from Bulgaria, she was rescued by kind locals after being shot with a BB gun, leaving her paralyzed. They searched for a safe place where she could live out the rest of her life in peace, and that’s how she found her way to us.

At first, Sofia wanted nothing to do with people—or other cats. She was wary, reserved, and determined to keep her distance. But time, patience, and a whole lot of love have helped her slowly open her heart. After a year and a half at the sanctuary, she now allows gentle pets from those she trusts—and even requests them! On rare occasions, she has even accepted affection from patient visitors, which feels like winning the feline lottery.

While she may still be selective with her company, one thing that never fails to bring her pure joy is catnip. She doesn’t just enjoy it—she luxuriates in it, rolling around blissfully as if soaking in the happiest moment of her life. It’s a sight that never fails to bring smiles to those who watch.

Sofia may be a cat who loves on her own terms, but that just makes every breakthrough with her all the more special.
